PhotoDalkeith 2025: Nature and Nurture | Contemporary Scottish Photography Exhibition at Dalkeith Palace
30 August - 5 October 2025, weekly, Fridays to Sundays
Following the successful launch in 2024, the Buccleuch Living Heritage Trust in partnership with Studies in Photography is delighted to announce the return of PhotoDalkeith for 2025. The magnificent Dalkeith Palace once again hosts the evocative exhibition of contemporary Scottish photography, this year curated by Julie Lawson and centred around the compelling themes of Nature and Nurture.
Running from 30th August to 5th October, the exhibition brings together work from seventeen leading photographers, many of whom are unveiling previously unseen pieces, created specifically in response to this year’s dual themes. Set within the grandeur of Dalkeith Palace and the surrounding estate, the exhibition invites visitors to reflect on the enduring relationship between people, place and the natural world. A special exhibition in the pop-up café will show the work by members of Midlothian Camera Club.
Among the highlights are a rare selection of never-before-seen photographs from the Buccleuch Family Albums, reinterpreted by Walter, Earl of Dalkeith. These images connect the family’s deep-rooted history with the natural beauty and heritage of the estate.

Workshops & Events
In addition to the main exhibition, visitors can enjoy a rich programme of events designed to deepen engagement with the themes of PhotoDalkeith 2025. A series of workshops and demonstrations offers hands-on opportunities to explore the creative process, from cyanotype printing to tintype portraiture led by expert photographers and suitable for all levels of experience.
Two special evening events provide further insight into the relationship between photography, history and thought. The Killing Time, on 18th September, brings together Iain Stewart, James Robertson and Dr Ashlyn Cudney in conversation, while Music of the Enlightenment, on 4th October, explores philosophy, nature and creativity through a combined talk and concert.
Palace & Exhibition Tours
Visitors can also take part in two distinct guided tours throughout the exhibition. PhotoDalkeith Exhibition Tours delve into the world of contemporary Scottish photography, providing deeper context to the featured artists and works on display. Tours of Dalkeith Palace itself offer a fascinating insight into the building’s rich and multi-layered history - from its origins as a medieval castle to its transformation into a grand ducal residence.
PhotoDalkeith runs from 30th August to 5th October. Tickets can be booked online at: www.dalkeithcountrypark.co.uk/event/photodalkeith/
