Meet the Team
Studies in Photography is made up of passionate and driven individuals with an interest in photography and publishing. We have skilled curators, artists, publishers and volunteers who work in the gallery and help create exhibitions off-site.
Director
Alexander Hamilton
Alexander Hamilton is an artist and publisher whose work bridges creative practice, historical process, and editorial scholarship. His artistic output is distinguished by a sustained engagement with photographic history and alternative processes—most notably cyanotype—through which he explores memory, materiality, and the poetic dimensions of image-making.
Hamilton serves as Director of Studies in Photography, where he combines academic leadership with his role as gallery director and lead on a range of off-site initiatives, including PhotoDalkeith, PhotoLondon, Bowhouse, and Focus on Poland 2027. His engagement with photography emphasizes both technical rigor and conceptual inquiry, encouraging emerging photographers to engage critically with the medium’s traditions while cultivating their own visual languages.
Alongside his artistic and management roles, Hamilton is also active in publishing and editorial work. He is Publisher and Co-Editor of the journals Leaves and Studies and Publisher of books, including Strategy:Get Arts - 35 Artists Who Broke the Rules and Surveying the Anthropocene- Environment and Photography Now—platforms that foster dialogue across art, photography, and visual culture. Through these publications he supports interdisciplinary discourse and provides space for both established and emerging voices in the field.
