In Search of the Blue Flower: Alexander Hamilton and The Art of Cyanotype

brings together almost half a century of Hamilton’s cyanotype-based practice, which has seen the Edinburgh-based artist explore the wonders of nature through the cyanotype’s unique photographic properties.

In Search of the Blue Flower is the first extensive study of Hamilton’s practice, and features 140 colour and black and white images across 168 pages.

‘Alexander Hamilton creates stunningly beautiful works of art. His photography has, for decades, explored the potential of the cyanotype process. This approach, rooted in the pre-history of photography, uses photosensitive paper and solutions that are exposed to sunlight. The results can be serendipitous but Hamilton’s metier, his extraordinary skill, crafts the most subtle and exquisite images.’
Dr Tom Normand HRSA Honorary Research Fellow School of Art History, University of St Andrews

‘These are exquisite images, enabling us to get so close to his subjects they become abstract, strange and rare.’
Alison Watt, Artist.

‘Deep blue is the thread running through this unique book, which is a compelling compilation: an artist’s colourful biography, a rich collection of thought-provoking essays and a gallery of remarkably detailed contemplative cyanotype photograms.’
Annette Golaz- Author of Cyanotype Toning: Using Botanicals to Tone Blueprints Naturally.

‘Much of Alexander Hamilton’s work is defined by a passion for nature and a desire to bring together the arts and sciences related to the world of plants.’
Vanessa Sellars- Director of the Humanities Institute The New York Botanical Garden
