The photograph comes from a series, Our Own Hungers, about which Malde writes: "These photographs are formed out of beauty. Their balance, like much that is beautiful, reminds us of our center, of what must be held steadily. They show us the dignity of poverty, but also point to the offensiveness of injustice. To not have is a separate matter from being denied something. And yet, ‘not having’ and ‘being denied’ sit on the same fulcrum, and as they are balanced further and further away from each other, if, for instance, we look at these photographs from the distance of privilege, the balance and its fulcrum collapses. A kitchen brings together what otherwise may seem disconnected. It satisfies our own hungers, but also stands guard, so that never may our own hunger.”
