Brief Encounters in Night-time Suburbia is part of a larger body of work under the working title ‘Bloody Foreigners’, documenting palm trees in the seaside resort of Torbay. By isolating these examples of imported exotica (used today to brand the borough as ‘the English Riviera’) and in light of the 2016 EU referendum, this body of work seeks to consider tensions between the familiar and the exotic, as well as broader ideas of ownership and appropriation.
