2019 Annan Lecture

Photography, the Art World and the Art Market

Thursday, 20 June 2019 from 18:30 to 20:00

Street Level Photoworks | 103 Trongate | G1 5HD Glasgow

What is photography’s place within the art world? It is now widely recognised as a major art form but how did this recognition come about? And what are the consequences for photography of its wider acceptance? Do we still need photography-specific organisations, collections, exhibitions…and lectures?

In this wide-ranging talk, Dr Juliet Hacking offers a new account of photography’s place in the art world and the art market, overturning the conventional charting of a move from the margins to the mainstream.
